Before Summer Slips Away

·

Just One More…

August in the Sierra Foothills isn’t subtle. It slows us down to create just one more memory.

The hills have turned golden. The afternoons are hot enough that everyone starts looking for shade by two o’clock. You come home dusty from the trail, your shirt stuck to your back, still thinking about jumping into the river later.

This is the last stretch of summer.

School is about to begin. Harvest is just around the corner. The pace of life is getting ready to change.

But not quite yet.

There are still plenty of places to explore, experiences to enjoy, and memories waiting to be made before summer rolls softly into autumn.

There’s still time for… just one more.

Just One More Trail

Start early while the air is still cool, knowing the August heat won’t be far behind.

Or lace up in the evening, when the canyon finally begins to cool after another hot day. If you’re looking to discover something new, consider China Bar Trail, Culvert Trail, Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park (Pilot Hill), Bear River Preserve, or the Black Hole of Calcutta.

The trails are still dusty. You’re still sweating. But somehow that only makes the American River sound even better.

Here, a hike and a swim have always gone together.

Late summer is one of the best times to enjoy these locations because river flows are generally lower than in spring. Even so, conditions change from year to year, and the American River deserves respect. Cold water, slippery granite, and unexpected currents still pose risks, so always check conditions, wear appropriate footwear, and never dive into unfamiliar water.

Just One More Swim

Whether it’s the American River or the hotel pool, the last swim of the day is always the hardest to leave.

Some swimming holes you might be curious to explore include Lake Clementine, China Bar, No Hands Bridge, Mineral Bar, Mammoth Bar, and Oregon Bar. If lake life is more your style, consider Sugar Pine Reservoir in Foresthill or Rollins Lake near Colfax.

Just one more hour. Then the sun starts dropping, and that hour slips by so quickly. You’ll be glad you stayed.

Just One More Stop

August is made for roadside stops.

Maybe it’s an antique or vintage shop where you discover a piece you didn’t know you were looking for. DeWild Haus Antiquities in Newcastle. Lady of the Canyon and Vintage Redeemed in Auburn are all worth wandering through and bringing something new-to-you home.

It could be a roadside farmstand or market.

Peaches picked that morning. Nectarines that drip down your hand. Tomatoes that actually smell and taste like farm-grown tomatoes – because they are. Sweet corn. Local honey. Fresh flowers sitting beside an honor box.

You stop for a basket of peaches. You leave with pie (voted top pie in the nation in a recent survey), jam, and enough produce to make dinner for a few nights and lunch box treats that will bring back the memories you have just created.

That’s just how August is experienced here.

Just One More Evening Out

By late afternoon, you’ve accepted that August isn’t cooling off anytime soon.

The heat hangs on, but you know the evening will eventually win.

Auburn Cruise Nites brings classic cars downtown on Friday evenings, while families stroll Old Town with an ice cream in hand or enjoy a cocktail within the city-approved Entertainment Zone. Patios begin to fill. Live music drifts across wineries, breweries, and restaurants throughout the region.

Maybe you’ll choose an evening at Gander House in Loomis, Old Fillin Station in Meadow Vista (last Saturday of every month), theTERRACE in Auburn, or Three Pines Bistro & Bar in Colfax. Or perhaps you’ll settle in at The Station Public House, Pasquale’s, Tre Pazzi Trattoria, or Monkey Cat—each offering its own take on outdoor dining.

Wherever you land, August evenings have a way of pulling you in little longer for just one more.

School bells will ring soon enough.

The vineyards will trade quiet afternoons for a busy harvest.

Fall festivals, pumpkins, and changing leaves are waiting their turn.

But not quite yet.

For now, there’s still another trail to explore, another swim, another roadside stop, another band playing somewhere, and another patio worth settling into.

Don’t bury the list of memories you planned to make this this summer. Pull out the list, click the many links above, and discover a new experience in the Sierra Foothills … somewhere between Loomis, into Penryn, Newcastle, and Auburn and up to Colfax.

I’d say that’s reason enough for just one more.
